1 Corinthians 9:24
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.
My daughter Amanda recently decided to run for President of her fifth grade class. The first step in the process was to answer some questions about her candidacy. For example: Why would you be a good President? What sorts of changes would you pursue?
We talked about the responsibilities of leadership, began an outline of her personal qualifications, and listed the types of things she thought needed to be improved at school. Amanda said, "Wow Dad, is being President really this complicated?" I said, "I think it's important you have these things clear in your own mind before you start. And as far as I'm concerned, if you're going to run -- then you might as well run in a way so you can win. You will be a very good President!"
I think far too few Christians take this approach when sharing the Gospel with others, applying Biblical principles, and discovering the peace that Christ brings to our lives. They don't fully consider how "to get the prize." However, unlike running a race against a spiritual giant like Paul -- we're not competing against each other. We're only competing against ourselves. Jesus taught on this subject in Matthew 25:14-30. The main point of this parable is: Are we developing the talents the Lord entrusted to us for His glory? Are we setting aside our freedom and rights so others might be brought into the Kingdom? This is the nature of the race we run. Have you been running to win?
The starting and finishing line of our race is the completed work of Jesus on the Cross of Calvary. We have already won the race. As a result, we have a place reserved in heaven, so let's not be confused regarding Paul's instruction. He's not talking about earning salvation, but what we do with the talents God has given us. Have you been living your life for the glory of the Lord? How can you bring your ambition and interests into alignment with His will?
